Life On Board
What to Expect
Living on a boat offers a unique and rewarding experience, giving you the chance to connect deeply with nature and embrace a simpler, more mindful way of living. While our catamaran has been thoughtfully upgraded to enhance comfort and sustainability, it’s important to note that life at sea is different from life on land. Some adjustments may be needed to fully enjoy the rhythm of life aboard, including flexibility, presence, and a willingness to let go of certain habits or expectations. We invite you to lean into this simplicity and allow it to support your journey inward.
Mobility and Unique Sensations
One of the joys of life on a boat is its mobility – waking up in a new, breathtaking location each day, while your comfortable cabin remains your constant haven. No need to pack and unpack your suitcase; your home travels with you.
Living on the water comes with its unique sensations. The gentle rocking of the waves, the sound of water lapping against the hull, the creaking of the lines, and the wind whispering through the masts – all of these elements become part of the natural rhythm of life at sea.
They invite you to slow down, become more present, and feel deeply connected to your environment.
For many, these are soothing and grounding sensations that foster a deep connection to nature. For others, it may take a little time to adjust to the constant motion and unfamiliar sounds. To help you ease into this experience, we provide earplugs on board, allowing for a peaceful night’s rest while you adapt to the rhythm of life at sea.
Weather and Safety
At Body, Mind & Sail, your safety and comfort are always our priorities. In dangerous weather, we will remain safely in port or a safe anchorage and not set sail.
If the weather is uncomfortable but not unsafe, we’ll discuss options with the group to decide whether to venture out or stay in the Harbour. While this may occasionally disrupt the schedule, we’ll create alternative routes or activities. In rare cases, this could involve arranging transportation, such as a bus, ferry, or taxi – to ensure you reach your destination or the airport safely.
On calmer days with no wind, we can continue the journey by using the motor, ensuring we stay on course while enjoying the tranquility of the sea.
Sea Sickness and Remedies
Our catamaran is more stable than a monohull, offering a smoother and more comfortable experience, even for those prone to motion sickness. We try to avoid bad weather whenever possible, and the areas we sail typically enjoy calm seas and pleasant conditions.
To help ease nausea, we provide natural remedies like ginger (tablets or fresh), peppermint oil, and acupressure. Spending time on deck in the fresh air and focusing on the horizon can also be effective. Additionally, breathwork exercises can help calm the nervous system and reduce symptoms of motion sickness.
For extra support, you can bring motion sickness pills, such as meclizine or dimenhydrinate, and take them before sailing if needed. We also provide a daily weather forecast to help you prepare for any expected movement. Most guests find they adapt to the boat’s rhythm within a few days, allowing them to fully relax and enjoy the experience of life at sea.
Upgrades for Comfort and Sustainability
Our boat has been upgraded with solar panels, a watermaker, high-capacity batteries, and energy-efficient air conditioning units – allowing us to live off-grid for extended periods. These improvements reduce our reliance on the generator, helping to minimise noise and pollution while still offering you modern-day comforts.
That said, resources such as water and electricity remain precious. We kindly ask you to use them mindfully, as we aim to keep generator use to a minimum.
Water and Energy Conservation
Our watermaker allows us to produce fresh water when needed, but it consumes a significant amount of energy. That’s why conserving water helps us maintain both water and energy balance on board. We kindly ask you to take short showers, turn off taps when not in use, and approach water usage mindfully.
Similarly, while our solar-powered batteries meet most of our daily energy needs, we encourage limited use of energy-intensive appliances, such as air conditioning, to preserve power and reduce reliance on the generator.
Together, these small efforts help us live more sustainably and harmoniously with the environment.
Air Conditioning Tips
We provide four energy-efficient air conditioning units for comfort, even off-grid. However, we recommend setting the temperature no lower than 24°C, especially in warm weather. This temperature is ideal for sleeping, particularly when paired with a fan, which helps circulate air efficiently without overloading the system.
Pump Toilets
The pump-operated toilets on board work differently from land-based systems. Please do not flush any paper, wipes, or other materials to avoid blockages. A dedicated bin is provided for these items, and we’ll guide you on how to use the toilets upon arrival. (video)
Space and Privacy
Life on a boat means sharing cozy spaces. Each couple or single guest has a private twin cabin, but shared areas like the saloon and deck require mutual respect. Keep noise to a minimum and be mindful of others’ need for quiet and privacy, especially during reflective times.
If you choose to stay on board during free time, please note that 1:1 sessions may take place in certain areas. It’s essential to maintain a calm and quiet environment during these sessions to respect the process. Organize everything you’ll need for activities in advance to avoid frequent trips back and forth to your cabin.
